Mid-infrared spectral evolution of thermally annealed amorphous pyroxene

چکیده
Ground and space born spectroscopic observations have shown that crystalline Mg-rich silicates are among the main components of cometary grains. We have produced amorphous Mg-rich pyroxene particles by laser evaporation of natural mineral. Thermal annealing of the material has been performed at 800 and 1000 ◦C for different time lags. Composition and morphological properties of the samples have been characterized. Mid–infrared spectroscopy has been used to monitor the structural evolution with annealing from amorphous to crystalline phase. The activation temperature of the amorphous to crystalline transition derived from our measurements is about 47,500 K. This result suggests that crystalline silicates, observed in comets, may have been produced by long term exposure of the amorphous grains to temperature higher than 770 K during the pre–cometary phase.

Annealing of Silicate Dust by Nebular Shocks at 10 AU
Silicate dust grains in the interstellar medium are known to be mostly amorphous, yet crystalline silicate grains have been observed in many long-period comets and in protoplanetary disks. Annealing of amorphous silicate grains into crystalline grains requires temperatures > ∼ 1000K, but exposure of dust grains in comets to such high temperatures is incompatible with the generally low temperatu...
متن کاملEffect of GaP strain compensation layers on rapid thermally annealed InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot infrared photodetectors grown by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition
The effect of GaP strain compensation layers was investigated on ten-layer InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot infrared photodetectors QDIPs grown by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition. Compared with the normal QDIP structure, the insertion of GaP has led to a narrowed spectral linewidth and slightly improved detector performance. A more significant influence of GaP was observed after the structure wa...

Amorphous GeOx/SiO2 multilayers (1<x<2) were prepared by successive evaporation of GeO2 and SiO2 powders onto the Si substrates maintained at 100°C. Structural study by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared-absorption (FTIR) spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was carried out. These techniques allowed us to follow the structural evolution, and...
متن کاملLaboratory studies of thermally processed H2O-CH3OH-CO2 ice mixtures and their astrophysical implications
Data of the Infrared Space Observatory ISO have strongly influenced the current view of interstellar ice chemistry. ISO and ground-based results have confirmed that the most abundant ice species in warm regions close to massive protostars are H2O, CO2, and CH3OH. Ice segregation in those environments reflects the extensive thermal processing of grains over the lifetime of protostars. We present...

[1] We have utilized optical constants derived from thermal infrared spectra acquired by the Mariner 9 Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (M9 IRIS) and Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS TES), during periods of relatively high dust/low water ice opacity, to generate synthetic transmission and emission spectra of the atmospheric dust. Using libraries of transmission and em...
